Case Six: Morning Sickness of Pregnancy
I often treat this condition with success, but this was an unusual case in that she was suffering 'hyperemesis gravidarium' - an extreme form of morning sickness that leads to constant vomiting with the inability to keep any food or fluid down - sufferers end up hospitalised on a drip in order to rehydrate their bodies. She had had it throughout her first pregnancy and was now pregnant for the second time, dreading a repeat performance because she needed to be well and home to look after her toddler.
It was also unusual in that she had been seeing a different homeopath for a couple of months who had tried a number of the usual and not so usual remedies for morning sickness to no avail.
Her eating habits were bizarre as she had developed a number of strategies around what and when to eat in the hope of not being sick. But the clue came when she told me that the only thing she could keep down in the mornings was flat Coca-Cola. She actually would leave the lid off a bottle of Coke in her desk drawer at work so she could drink it when she arrived at work and that would seem to settle her stomach for long enough to eat some dry biscuits at lunchtime.
Knowing that Coke contains phosphoric acid, I wondered whether intuitively she was seeking a source of this mineral to restore her body balance, and theorised that the lady concerned might actually be of a Phosphoric constitution but that she didn't seem like one at the moment because she was so ill and tired.
I gave Phos in a low potency but frequently and received a phone call 48 hours later informing me that she had not been sick since she took the first pill. This pregnancy continued to need homeopathic treatment and management of gestational diabetes later, but eventually a very healthy baby girl was born at home. The family moved home shortly afterwards and the mother suffered post-natal depression, which I continued to treat by telephone consultations and remedies, until finally all was well.
